Types of the 12v-Storage-Battery

The 12v-storage-battery is used to power many things such as RVs, bass boats, golf carts, zero turn lawnmowers, and backup power systems. They can operate in a wide variety of temperatures.

These batteries require regular maintenance and careful monitoring to function at their best. Their expected lifespan is between 2 and 5 years.

Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Flooded lead acid batteries are the oldest and most common type of 12 volt battery. They consist of suspended lead plates immersed in a solution of sulfuric acid to initiate the chemical reaction that produces electrons and stores energy. Due to their affordability and high energy density, these batteries are often used in vehicles, emergency power supplies, renewable energy systems, and some commercial lighting and other industrial applications.

When a flooded lead acid battery is connected to a light bulb, the electrical current from the bulb causes a chemical reaction between the metal lead and the sulfuric acid. This leads to the production of lead sulfate on the positive and negative plates. During the discharge cycle, the lead sulfate coating continues to grow and the battery voltage decreases from its fully charged state of 12.6 volts.

While the flooded lead acid battery is one of the most cost-effective types of 12V rechargeable batteries, they require more maintenance than other battery options. They must be topped up with water periodically to ensure that the electrolyte level does not drop below an optimal point. They also need to be “equalized” and charged with higher charging voltages on a regular basis to maximize their lifespan.

The open nature of a flooded battery makes it susceptible to accidental spillage and leakage of battery acid which can create harmful fumes. This is why these batteries must be stored in a well-ventilated area.

Sealed Lead Acid Battery

The sealed lead acid battery also known as maintenance free and valve regulated lead acid battery has a fixed electrolyte. It is designed with a special oxygen recombination mechanism and internal pressure control to ensure that the battery doesn’t lose its electrolyte and can be used without any spillage.

They are very common in UPS applications as well as automotive, marine and telecommunications. They are a rechargeable, single cell type battery that consists of lead plates immersed in an electrolyte of dilute sulfuric acid. They come in a variety of all-in-one-ess sizes, configurations and voltages to suit the specific needs of different applications.

Unlike flooded batteries that require water to be added, periodic equalization and specific gravity testing with a hydrometer; the sealed lead acid battery requires no maintenance or venting. This is a large selling point for people that are not interested in dealing with battery maintenance.

However, this does not mean that the battery is invincible. The sealed lead acid battery is susceptible to physical damage such as cracked plates or corroded connections due to the chemical transformation of the active materials. The physical damage can be exacerbated by excessive ambient temperature which can cause the battery to consume more water at a faster rate reducing its service life.

AGM Battery

AGM batteries (also known as Absorbed Glass Mat, dry or maintenance-free) are gaining in popularity in recent years. These batteries feature a non-spillable, sealed design that protects against damage caused by acid spilling or battery fluid escaping. They also offer superior power output, a deeper cycling capability, and resistance to vibrations and shocks. These features make them ideal for use in modern vehicles with advanced always-on technology, as well as boats, RVs and backup power systems.

The fiberglass mats in an AGM battery tightly pack the lead plates and allow for a higher level of cranking amps. The design of these batteries also prevents the internal resistance that occurs in traditional lead-acid batteries. This translates to a longer battery life and faster charging. AGM batteries are also highly resistant to vibration, a trait that has earned them a coveted spot among motorcycle and racing car drivers.

AGM batteries can be mounted in various positions, including sideways or upside down, without leaking acid. Additionally, they require little to no maintenance except for checking terminal connections and ensuring that the battery is properly charged.

Gel Battery

Gel batteries use a solid electrolyte suspension, instead of the liquid sulfuric acid in wet lead-acid batteries. This allows them to perform like wet lead-acid batteries without the spilling and other hazards associated with them. They’re also more durable than wet lead-acid batteries and can be used in applications that require deep cycles. However, gel batteries are usually more expensive than wet lead-acid batteries and are only found in high-end products.

Gel battery technology offers several benefits, including a sealed design that eliminates the need for regular watering and maintenance tasks. They also have a longer lifespan than wet lead-acid batteries, thanks to their design that minimizes plate corrosion and extends the battery’s cycle life.

These batteries are often used in power tools, camcorders, and electric vehicles. They are also used in deep-cycle applications because of their ability to tolerate repeated discharge and recharge cycles.
